African Burial Ground Visitor Center

African Burial Ground National Monument
New York, NY

In 1991, the 7-acre African Burial Ground site in lower Manhattan was “re-discovered.” The site became a National Historic Landmark in 1993, and in 2006 it was designated a National Monument by President George W. Bush. It is the final resting place for as many as 15,000 free and enslaved African men, women, and children who lived during the 17th and 18th Centuries.

The African Burial Ground is one of the most significant cultural sites for African history and heritage in America, both in terms of its content and the ongoing research and “re-learning” that it has engendered. Amaze Design was entrusted with a great responsibility not only to create exhibits that would sensitively interpret and honor the lives of those interred here but also to foster awareness of the critical role of Africans in the building and history of New York City.
